SaaS Metrics Calculator Methodology

Last updated: February 2025

Overview

Our SaaS metrics calculators use industry-standard formulas established by leading venture capital firms, SaaS analysts, and financial reporting standards. These metrics are commonly used by investors, founders, and finance teams to evaluate SaaS business performance.

Core SaaS Metrics & Formulas

Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR)

MRR = Σ (Monthly subscription value per customer)

The sum of all recurring revenue normalized to a monthly amount. Annual contracts are divided by 12. One-time fees are excluded.

Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR)

ARR = MRR × 12

Annualized MRR, commonly used for SaaS companies with $10M+ revenue. Represents the annualized value of all active subscriptions.

Customer Lifetime Value (LTV)

LTV = ARPU / Monthly Churn Rate

Alternative: LTV = ARPU × Gross Margin % × Average Customer Lifespan. Represents total expected revenue from a customer relationship.

Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

CAC = (Sales + Marketing Costs) / New Customers Acquired

Total cost to acquire a customer, including all sales and marketing expenses over a period divided by customers acquired.

LTV:CAC Ratio

LTV:CAC = LTV / CAC

Key efficiency metric. Benchmark: 3:1 or higher is considered healthy for most SaaS businesses.

Churn Rate

Monthly Churn = Customers Lost / Starting Customers × 100%

Revenue churn = MRR lost / Starting MRR. Net Revenue Retention includes expansion revenue.
